Dr. JianJiong (JJ) Gao is an Assistant Attending Computational Oncologist in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Lead Scientist of Knowledge Systems group in the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Center for Molecular Oncology. Trained in computer science and bioinformatics, Dr. Gao’s passion lies at the intersection of computational oncology and software engineering. The primary goal of his group is to enable translational and clinical discoveries by building large biomedical data and software infrastructure. The projects he has been building include cBioPortal (a web resource of the analysis of complex cancer genomics data), OncoKB (a precision oncology knowledge base), Genome Nexus (a web resource for comprehensive annotation of cancer variants), SIGNAL (a population-scale resource of germline variants and accompanying somatic alterations in cancer), and MSK MIND (a strategic initiative aimed at accelerating research and discovery through advanced analytics). Dr. Gao has also contributed to a number of collaborative cancer genomics projects including TCGA, AACR Project GENIE, and MSK-IMPACT. By building computational and translational data infrastructure, his goal is to provide researchers and clinicians with the tools for analyzing and interpreting complex genotypic and phenotypic data from cancer patients.
