Memorial Sloan Kettering is a leader in the use of laparoscopic and robotic surgery for the management of thoracic, gynecologic, gastrointestinal, prostate, and other cancers. Our surgeons are actively developing new devices to make operations safer and more effective. Their work is enhanced by the latest software, imaging equipment, and high-definition monitors.

Many of our surgeons now use these technologies to diagnose, stage, and treat various cancers. The approach enhances visualization, allows for a high level of precision, and can reduce the risk of injury.

Robotic-Assisted Surgery

In many cases, we perform robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery to diagnose, stage, and treat abdominal, gynecologic, lung, esophageal, prostate, hepatobiliary, and gastrointestinal cancers. This approach enhances visualization, allows for a high level of precision, and can reduce the risk of injuring nerves.

We have urologic, thoracic, gynecologic, head and neck, pediatric, and general surgeons who are trained on the da Vinci® robotic surgical platforms.

Memorial Sloan Kettering has been a leader in robotic-assisted surgery. We were the first to develop a comprehensive robotic surgery simulation training platform for surgeons, fellows, and residents. We were also the first to develop a multidisciplinary fluorescence imaging practice.

We have the largest number of robotic systems in the five boroughs of New York City. Our surgeons performed the second largest volume of robotic surgeries in New York City in 2011. Between 2001 and 2011, we performed more than 4,000 robotic procedures, including:

  • 1,710 gynecologic
  • 1,634 urologic
  • 521 thoracic
  • 111 general surgery
  • 30 head and neck
  • 1 pediatric
