Dr. Tansey joined the Computational Oncology Service in July of 2020 as an Assistant Attending. Dr. Tansey’s research is at the intersection of statistics and computing, with a focus on principled machine learning methods motivated by problems in cancer biology and medicine. His lab develops new methods to address the data science challenges raised by emerging technologies, such as high-throughput screening and single-cell sequencing. Dr. Tansey has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin and has trained at Columbia University and Columbia University Medical Center. He is a co-organizer of the Workshop on Computational Biology at the International Conference on Machine Learning and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Machine Learning Research. Since joining MSK, he has published five papers in top-tier machine learning and statistics venues. He has also recruited two external PhD students into his nascent lab, one at University of Texas at Austin Computer Science and one at University of Michigan Statistics. Both students are co-advised by Dr. Tansey and will be visiting MSK via the Computer Science Internship Program in the summer. His current work involves combination therapy discovery algorithms, new methods for analyzing cellular imaging data, and discovering causal drivers of treatment response.
